This is exciting news. We know that the European Parliament has officially recognised Livestock’s contribution to environmental problems (whcih is incalcuable), and is going to reduce subsidies to livestock production, but here’s a positive step from the “ground up”, more or less.
Starting this week there will be a regular weekly meatless day, in which civil servants and elected councillors will opt for vegetarian meals.
Ghent means to recognise the impact of livestock on the environment.

Introducing vegetarianism in a positive light for children is very important for their future. We do want them to live in a plentiful and peaceful world, don’t we? We do wish them health and happiness, don’t we?
Schoolchildren will follow suit with their own veggiedag in September.
. . .
Around 90,000 so-called “veggie street maps” are now being printed to help people find the city’s vegetarian eateries.
I hope that soon we hear more good news like this.

This is awesome! Would be fantastic if other cities around the world could take stock of this and join in.
